It's with profound sadness that we announce our dearly beloved Mom/ "Mom-Mom", Catherine "Cathy" Veronica Curran Popolow (Nee Whatley), has passed away at the age 77 the morning of May 14th, 2023 at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, after a short battle with illness surrounded by loved ones. Cathy was born in the Kensington area of Philadelphia, PA, and spent much of her childhood with her grandparents in New Orleans, LA. Catherine attended the now defunct St.Anne's Catholic School, and later graduated from John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in the class of 1964. Catherine served her community as an employee of the City of Philadelphia for ~20 years, and after a brief retirement, she returned to aid the school children of the community as a crossing guard. Catherine was a committed member of St.Anne's parish, where she was declared a "Miracle of St.Anne". Cathy loved vacationing down the shore in Wildwood NJ, cruising the Atlantic Ocean, caring for her beloved dogs, listening to her favorite music, and cooking breakfast, but most of all she loved spending time with her family. Ms.Popolow joins her daughter Deborah A. Nowak (Timothy), sister Francine L. Cassizzi (Nicholas), brother Wilfred E. Whatley II (Carol), son-in-law Jason C. DiMartino (Catherine), and her father and mother Wilfred E. and Veronica Whatley. Catherine survived by her daughters, Catherine M. DiMartino (Jason) and Cindy A. Goda (John), who she raised independently as a single mother. She was a devoted "Mom-Mom" to grandchildren Jason M. Nowak, Amanda V. Nowak, Connor D. DiMartino and Ciarán M. DiMartino. Also survived by great granddaughters as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A mass will be held 11am the morning of Monday, May 22nd at St.Anne's Catholic Church, 2328 E Lehigh Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125.
In lieu of flowers we ask that donations please be made to The Special Olympics and/or PAWS Animal Welfare Society, nonprofit organizations dear to Catherine's heart.
